Increasingly organizations rely for their success on their ability to forge effective working relationships across entities. Most organizations recognize that they can significantly increase their impact by creating synergies with other organizations that complement their skill-sets, access to customers, range of services, and other key factors. Sometimes these partnerships are formed within organizations—between key departments—and often they occur across organizations. The form that these partnerships taken can be highly formal, such as a merger, or less formal, such as a memorandum of understanding.

The chance for a successful partnership can be significantly enhanced when the different partners develop shared goals, agree on a common strategy, and explore areas of concern. All of this must be built on a foundation of a trusting relationship where the respective partners can authentically explore their areas of shared interest and concerns and build a solid base for proceeding.
